Call Links is a new way to connect and get in touch with your friends and family using Whatsapp Calls. This feature allows you to create call-specific links that can then be used to invite participants to a one-on-one or a group call. This feature works with a single tap, and tapping a received link will allow you to join the concerned call seamlessly. Call Links take away the hassle of creating a call and selecting your calls manually to invite them. This can be cumbersome and can frequently lead to blunders where you select a contact you did not wish to invite to the call by mistake.

You can group call up to 32 users using Call Links on Whatsapp. Each user can join using the shared link as long as they’re using the latest version of Whatsapp on their devices.

Call Links are supported by both audio and video calls. This is notable because video group calls on Whatsapp only supported up to 8 members before this. With the release of Call Links, you can now group call up to 32 users at any given time. This feature was also teased independently by Whatsapp back in April with no hints of Call Links back then. The ability to video call 32 people at once might seem insignificant at first when you compare it to the likes of Zoom, Meet, and Teams. But these services often place restrictions on call durations or call participants when it comes to free accounts. Some do not offer end-to-end encrypted calls unless you have a paid account. Whatsapp will help circumvent these restrictions as the platform allows for free and unlimited calls, whether video or audio. Additionally, all calls on the platform are encrypted, which offers enhanced privacy when compared to other services.

Here’s how you can create and join a Call Link on Whatsapp. Use either guide below, depending on your preferences.

You can create Call Links from the Calls tab on Whatsapp. Here’s how you can get started using this new feature on Whatsapp.

  1. Open the app and tap Calls at the top if using Android or at the bottom, if you’re using an iPhone.
  2. Now tap Create call link.
  3. Choose the type of call you wish to create and follow the on-screen instructions to create and copy the link to your clipboard. You can now share the link with your friends and family that you wish to invite to your Whatsapp call. You do not need Whatsapp to share the link. You can instead use any preferred means of communication to share the link.

Now that you’re familiar with creating links, let’s take a look at how you can join a call using a link.

  1. If you’ve received a Call Link in a third-party app, then tap the link, and you will be redirected to your browser. Now tap Join call.
  2. You will now be prompted to open Whatsapp. Tap Open to confirm your choice.
  3. If you received your link in a chat on Whatsapp, then you can tap Join Call directly underneath the link you received. You will now be redirected to the call, and you should have joined in using your Call Link.

Unfortunately, Call Links won’t be supported for desktops whether you’re using Whatsapp for the web or the dedicated Whatsapp app on your computer. This feature, however, could be introduced with future updates to Whatsapp for Desktop.

Whatsapp is slated to release this feature worldwide this week as of writing this post. This means you should be able to use this feature once an update to Whatsapp is issued in the next few days.

Whatsapp generally rolls out new features gradually to different regions. We recommend waiting a day or two for the feature to appear in your region. Additionally, we also recommend you regularly check for updates and update Whatsapp as soon as an update is issued in your region.

Final Words

Call Links are a great way to instantly join and share audio and video calls. They take away the hassle of initiating a call manually and help ensure you have more control over ongoing calls. Links also help control that only people with access to the link can join your Whatsapp call. I hope the post above helped you get familiar with the new Call Links feature in Whatsapp.
