How to take Screenshot in Windows 11
1. Using Snipping Tool
The first way to take a screenshot on Windows 11 is to use the Snipping tool. It is a built-in application provided by Microsoft within the OS to take screenshots of your Windows PC. To open up the Snipping tool simply press Windows + S and search for the Snipping Tool. The snipping tool will open up on the screen in a small window. You can use this tool to take screenshots in different ways like screenshots of the whole screen, particular windows, manual rectangular screenshots, etc. And in order to do that, you’ll see an option called Mode. Click on it and you’ll see a list of different modes of taking the screenshots. Here are what different modes are used for: Now when you are done with the modes. It’s time to take the screenshot.
Select the mode in which you want to take the screenshot.Now, click on the New button.
Use the mouse to select the area whose screenshot you want to capture.After selecting the area, the Snipping tool will automatically capture it and will show you the preview of the capture.The selected area has been copied on the clipboard. Either you can paste it directly somewhere or you can save the screenshot from that preview windows by pressing Ctrl + S or go to files and select Save As.
In the Save As windows, give the file a name and save it on your PC wherever you want.
2. Using Print Screen Key
Windows keyboard comes with a specific key to take capture the screenshot. Windows 11 is no different and the Print Screen key can also be used on Windows 11 in the same way as Windows 10 to take screenshots. The Print Screen can be used in different ways depending on what type of screenshot you want to capture. Let’s explore them.
Windows + Print Screen – Capture the whole screen
This key combination (Windows key + Print Screen) will let you capture the screenshot of the entire screen. When you’ll press the key combination the display brightness will get dim for a second. That means the screenshot of the whole screen has been taken and has been save to C:\Users[user]\Pictures\Screenshots.
Alt + Print Screen
The Print Screen key pressing with the Alt key will let you take the screenshot of the active window. There is a catch that this method doesn’t save the file automatically. Instead, it copies the captured image on the clipboard, and in order to save that, you’ll have to paste that image file in an application like MS Paint. After pasting the image save it as an image file on your Windows 11 PC.
Print Screen
Instead of combinations, you can directly use the Print Screen key on the keyboard to capture the whole screen. This will also help you in saving screenshots of multiple monitor setups in one single image. This is the main difference between the Print Screen and Windows + Print Screen. The former can be used to capture the screenshot of the entire screen of all the connected monitors combined in one single file while the latter captures the screen of one single monitor.
3. Using Snip and Sketch (Windows + Shift + S shortcut)
The Snip and Sketch application is another Windows’ in-built way of capturing screenshots. You can call it a much-sophisticated version of the Snipping Tool. To use it, press Windows key + Shift + S on your keyboard and the Snip and Sketch menu will appear on the top of the screen. You’ll see four different options in the menu followed by a cross sign.
First option allows you to capture manual rectangular screenshots.Second option give you the freeform snipping i.e. you can capture the screen by manuallt drawing shapes on the display using the mouse.Third option allows you to capture a specific window.Fourth option makes you to capture the image of the entire screen.
You can use any of the options to capture the screenshot depending on your requirement.
Select one of the option to capture the screenshot and use the cursor accordingly to capture the screenshot.Once the screenshot is capture, it’ll get saved on the clipboard and windows will also show a notification with a preview of the taken screenshot.Either you can paste the copied image somewhere like MS Paint and save it or you can open the popped up notification which will open the Snip and Sketch preview window and save it.The Snip and Sketch preview window also let you edit the screenshot like adding text, color highlighting, shapes, etc.
4. Using Xbox Game Bar
Windows 11 (Windows 8 and 10 also) comes integrated with the Xbox game bar and this feature is extremely useful. You can use this feature to monitor the system status like CPU, GPU, RAM usage, the volume of the speaker and mic control, etc. Along with that the Game Bar also provides the facility to capture the display and screenshot. Press Windows + G key combination on the keyboard.As soon as you’ll press the key combination you’ll be greeted with a set of many windows.Look for the Capture window (top left) and click on the camera icon.
This will capture the screenshot of the whole screen and will get saved to C:\Users[user]\Videos\Captures
5. Using Windows Logo + Volume Down shortcut (For Microsoft Surface tablets)
Now, this method is specific to Microsoft Surface tablets. This is more like how you take screenshots on a smartphone by long-pressing the different physical key combinations. In Microsoft Surface tablets you are greeted with a dedicated Windows touch button along with physical power and volume buttons. In order to take screenshots on Microsoft tablets follow these steps:
Touch and hold the Windows logo key located on the lower front and press the physical volume down button.Your screen will get dim for a second and that means the screenshot has been taken and saved.The screenshot will get saved to C:\Users[user]\Pictures\Screenshots.
