The Discord app is available on almost all popular operating systems. Be it Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS. For each operating system, the steps to restart Discord is different. There are also different methods to restart Discord in different situations. What I have done here is separate the ways according to the operating system. Not just operating systems but I have further categorized them into methods. So, it will be easier to go to the specific part of the article using the table of contents instead of scrolling through the whole article.

How to Restart Discord on Windows

Windows is a go-to computer for gamers. A die-hard will prefer a Windows PC any day over Mac. Discord is very popular among gamers and it means a lot of its users are using it on Windows. Normally it works well on the PC but just like any other application Discord starts hanging and crashing. Thankfully a simple restart fixes the issue almost every time. If you are looking to restart Discord on Windows then there are many ways to do so. Below are some of the ways to restart Discord on Windows.

Method 1: By Tapping Cross (X) Icon

The most usual and used way to close any app in Windows is by clicking the cross (X) icon located at the top right corner. You can get the same cross button for the Discord app. But the cache here is at default settings tapping on the cross (X) icon minimizes the Discord app and does not close it completely. So even you try closing the Discord app using the cross button you will not be able to do it. But there is a setting that you can change to close Discord completely whenever you tap the X button. Follow the below steps to change that setting. Step 1: Open the Discord app on your Windows PC and go to User-Settings. Step 2: Under User-Settings go to Windows settings. On the Windows Settings page scroll down to look for a section named Close Button. Step 3: The very first option under the Close button will be Minimize to Tray. Turn off the toggle next to this option. It will turn off the Minimize to try settings. Now, whenever you will try to close the Discord app using the X icon instead of getting minimized in the tray it will get closed completely. This is how you can restart Discord on Windows by tapping the cross (X) icon.

Method 2: From Notification Area

Windows PC comes with a notification area also known as a System tray. You can find it in the bottom right corner of your PC. If you are experiencing unresponsiveness on the Discord app then you can restart it to get rid of the issue. But how does a restart function? To restart any app or program you will first need to quit it. You can quit Discord from the System tray by following the below steps. Step 1: Take your cursor to the bottom right corner of your Windows PC. You will see an upward-facing arrow icon along with power status and date-time. Tap on that arrow icon. Step 2: If the Discord app is running on your PC you will see the Discord icon in a small little window. Step 3: Right-click on the Discord icon and it will open a new window. You will see a few options including Check for Updates and Quit. Tap on the Quit option to close Discord on your PC. Step 4: After successfully closing the Discord reopen it from the desktop shortcut, taskbar, or Application section. This is how you can restart Discord on Windows from Notification Area.

Method 3: Using Task Manager

A few users have reported when Discord is crashing or misbehaving in that case they are not able to quit it from Notification Area. If you have tried quitting Discord from the notification area but are still not able to do it then you can quit Discord using Task Manager. The Windows Task Manager is a built-in app that monitors all the running apps and processes on a Windows PC. There are many ways to open Task Manager you can open it from the Taskbar or use keyboard shortcuts. Step 1: To open Task Manager from the taskbar right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager from the available options. If you want to open Task Manager using a keyboard shortcut then press CTRL+Shift+Escape on your keyboard. There is one more keyboard shortcut you can try: press CTRL+Alt+Delete on your keyboard and then select Task Manager. Step 2: Once you have opened Task Manager, select the Discord app and tap on End Task to close it. If you want to see all the processes in a bit more detail then tap on the More Details button to expand the window. You can find the button on the bottom left of your screen. Step 3: On the More, Details Window sort the list by name and look for Discord. You can also search for Discord to find it. Once you find the Discord app select it and then press End Task. Normally it should close the Discord app but to be extra sure go through the list of processes and look for any other running process related to Discord. If you find any such process select it and tap on End Task. Step 4: After getting 100% sure that every process related to Discord is closed reopen the Discord app. Most probably you will get the same snappier experience of using Discord that you are used to.

Method 4: Restarting the PC

If you tried all the above-mentioned fixes but none of them worked for you then the very last fix is to restart your PC. Restarting your PC will close all the running apps including Discord. It will clear all the RAM consumed by the apps running on your PC. To restart your PC, open the start menu and tap on Shut Down or Restart. Once your system is restarted open the Discord app and it is confirmed that the issue will be fixed.

How to Restart Discord on Mac

There are a lot of users using the Discord app on their Mac computers. Normally Discord runs very smoothly on Mac but sometimes it gets unresponsive or seems frozen. The fastest and easiest way to fix any such issue is to restart Discord on Mac. There are many ways one can restart Discord on Mac. But to restart Discord you will first have to close it. Below are a few of the popular ways you can try to first close the Discord app and then restart it.

Method 1: From the Dock

The easiest way to close Discord is from Dock. Follow the below steps to first Quit Discord and then restart it. Step 1: Go to Dock on your Mac, If you are using Discord in full screen bring the cursor to the bottom edge of your Mac screen and Dock will come out on the screen. Step 2: Look for the Discord app in Dock. Press Down on the trackpad and you will get a pop-up menu. Among the menu options tap on Quit. Step 3: Once done Discord will get closed on your Mac. Now go back to the Launchpad and restart it.

Method 2: Using the Apple Menu

A lot of times when Discord is unresponsive or misbehaving you might not be able to quit it from the Dock. In that case, you will need to Force Quit it. There are three ways to Force Quit Discord on Mac and the easiest one is using the Apple Menu. Follow the below steps to Force Quit Discord using the Apple Menu. Step 1: Keep the Discord app open and take the cursor to the top left corner of your screen to see the small Apple logo, tap on the Apple logo. Step 2: Now you will see a few options including an option named Force Quit, tap on it. Step 3: Now you will get a box with all the opened apps on your Mac. Select Discord from the list and then tap Force Quit. Step 4: Now the Discord app will get closed forcibly. To restart it go to the launchpad or Applications folder and open the Discord app.

Method 3: With Mac Shortcut

If you are in a hurry and don’t want to force quit applications using the Apple menu then most probably you are a shortcut lover. No issues, there is a Mac shortcut to force quit applications on Mac. Step 1: On your Mac keyboard, press and hold the Command+Option+Esc key. It will open the Force Quit Application window. Step 2: Go through the list of all the opened apps on your mac, select Discord, and tap on Force Quit. Step 3: Once you successfully force quit the Discord app go back to the Launchpad and restart it.

Method 4: Using Activity Monitor

If Discord didn’t get closed from the Force Quit Applications windows then you close it from the Activity Monitor app. The Activity Monitor is an app similar to Windows Task Manager. It shows all the running applications and processes in one single place. Follow the below steps to close Discord using the Activity Monitor app. Step 1: Press command+space on your Mac keyword to activate the spotlight. Alternatively, you can tap on the search icon from the menu bar by taking the cursor to the top right corner of your screen. Step 2: In the spotlight search type activity monitor, among the results tap on the very first result. It will open the Activity Monitor app on your Mac. Step 3: You will see the list of all running apps and processes on your Mac. Use the search box given in the top right corner and type Discord to find it easily. Step 4: Once you find Discord select and double click on it. A new window will open with details of the resources Discord is using. Step 5: You will also get a Quit option in the bottom left corner, tap on Quit. Step 6: On the next screen you will get a prompt Are you sure you want to quit this process? with three different options: Quit, Force Quit, and Cancel. Tap on Force Quit to forcibly quit the Discord app on your Mac. Step 7: After closing the Discord app go back to launchpad and restart it. Hopefully, you will not experience the same issue you were having earlier. So, this is how you can restart Discord on Mac from the Activity Monitor app.

How to Restart Discord on Android

If the Discord is misbehaving, not responding on your Android smartphones then the very first fix you should try is to restart Discord. To restart Discord on Android you will have to first close it. There are mainly two ways to close Discord on Android: from the home screen or using the apps manager. I have provided steps for both the ways below.

Method 1: From the Home Screen

The fastest way to close Discord on Android is to close it from the home screen. Follow the below steps to close Discord from the home screen. Step 1: View all the running apps on your Android smartphone. The process of doing it will depend on the smartphone you are using and the Android version it is running. On the latest Android smartphones with gesture navigation, swipe up from the home screen and pause in the middle of the screen. On some older Android smartphones with on-screen navigation, a dedicated button is provided to view all the recent apps. Step 2: When you view all the running apps swipe left or right or up and down depending on your smartphone to find Discord. Step 3: Once you find Discord swipe up to close it. Do remind it works only when your running apps are listed horizontally. If the running apps are listed vertically then swipe Discord left or right to close it. On a few Android smartphones, you get an exit (X) icon to close it. You can also tap on the exit button for Discord to close it. Step 4: After successfully closing Discord on your Android smartphone go to App Drawer and restart it. By following the above steps you can close Discord from the home screen and then restart it.

Method 2: Using Apps Manager

On a few occasions, Discord didn’t get closed when you are try to close it from the home screen. In that situation, you will need to force quit it using Apps manager. Follow the below steps to Force Quit Discord using Apps Manager. Step 1: First of all open the Settings app on your Android smartphone. Under settings go to Apps & notifications. If there is no such option in your device then look for a similar section with names like Apps, App Management, Application Manager. Step 2: In the Apps & notifications settings you will see a few recently opened apps, tap on See all apps. Go through the list of all apps and look for Discord. Step 3: Once you find Discord select it, Now you will see a few options: Open, Uninstall, and Force Stop. Tap on Force Stop to close it forcibly. Step 4: After force-stopping Discord, go back to the app drawer and restart it. Now you have successfully restarted Discord on your Android smartphone using Apps Manager.

How to Restart Discord on iOS

If the Discord app is unresponsive, hanging, or facing an issue on your iPhone then you can fix it by simply restarting the app. To restart the Discord on iOS will first need to close it. Closing apps on iPhone depends on which iPhone model you have. The process is slightly different on older iPhones than newer iPhones.

How to Restart Discord on iPhone X and later

The iPhone X ditched Touch ID to go completely bezel-less. It also brought a gesture-based navigation system on iPhones. After it, all the newly launched iPhones have the same design and navigation system. Closing apps on these models is done through gestures. Follow the below steps to close an app on iPhone X and later. Step 1: From the Discord app swipe up from the bottom to go to the home screen. Step 2: On the home screen swipe up from the bottom and stop when you see the recently opened apps. Step 3: The last opened app should be Discord, if it is not swipe left to find it. Step 4: Once you have found Discord in the recently opened apps, swipe up to close it. Step 5: After successfully closing Discord go back to App Library and tap on Discord to restart it. How to Restart Discord on iPhone SE, iPhone 8 and earlier

The process of closing apps on older iPhones is different as those models feature touch id also known as the Home button. Follow the below steps to close Discord on iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and earlier. Step 1: From the Discord app double click on the home button. Doing it will show all of your recently opened apps. Step 2: Look for Discord by swiping left or right. Step 3: When you do find the Discord app then simply swipe up to close it. Step 4: As you are looking to restart the Discord app now when it is close go to App Library and tap on it to reopen.
