Make Armor Stand in Minecraft (2022)

We have divided our guide to cover various aspects of the armor stand, ranging from its creation to its usage. So use the table below to skip to the elements that interest you the most.

What is an Armor Stand?

In Minecraft, the armor stand is an entity that can hold and equip items that are wearable by a player. The actual stand structure is made up of wood and placed on top of a stone slab. You can move it, place it, and even assign it poses as per your preference. Moreover, as you might expect, the stand, in itself, can’t use the items or armor it is holding.
But things change when you assign it the best armor enchantments. For example, an armor stand with the thorns enchantment can hurt a player that goes near it. Similarly, a stand with the frost walker enchantment can make frosted ice blocks when pushed over water by other entities.

Uses of Armor Stand in Minecraft

You can use an armor stand in Minecraft for the following purposes:

The armor stand can equip armor, mob heads, elytra, and similar items. With the right enchantments, you can also use them for protection and security systems.Since you can directly wear items from the stand, it can also work as a fast storage option. With the help of custom mob heads, you can use the armor stand to create characters and decorate your base.

Where to Find an Armor Stand

If you are lucky, you can also find naturally generating armor stands in Taiga villages. Two armor stands usually spawn in the outdoor armory of most taiga villages. Not only that, these stands spawn with iron chest plates and an iron helmet. You only have to find a Taiga village that has an armorer villager in it.

Items You Need to Make Armor Stand

To make an armor stand in Minecraft, you require the following items: Six wooden sticks and a smooth stone slab.

How to Get Sticks

To make sticks in Minecraft, you have to place two wooden planks vertically next to each other in the crafting area. You can do so in your inventory too, without using a crafting table. As for the wooden planks, you get them by placing wood logs in the crafting area. The type of wood you use doesn’t affect the armor stand in any way.

How to Make Smooth Stone Slab

Follow these steps to make a smooth stone slab in Minecraft:

  1. First, find and collect three cobblestones using a wooden pickaxe. Stone is a common block in the game, and it drops cobblestone when mined.
  2. Then, smelt the cobblestone blocks in a furnace to turn them into regular stone blocks.
  3. Next, use the furnace again to smelt the stone blocks and convert them into smooth stone blocks.
  4. Finally, place three smooth stones in the crafting area filling any row horizontally. This recipe will give you a smooth stone slab. Alternatively, you can also use a stonecutter in Minecraft to make slabs without any recipe.

Armor Stand Crafting Recipe

Once you have all the ingredients, you only need to combine them on a crafting table to make an armor stand.
To do so, you first need to place three sticks in each cell of the first row of the crafting area. Then, place one stick in the middle cell of the middle row. Finally, place the smooth stone slab in the middle cell of the bottom row with a stick on either side. And voila! You’ve successfully crafted an armor stand in Minecraft. Once the armor stand is ready, you can place it like any other block. But since it’s an entity, it will be affected by the game’s gravity. That means you can’t make it float in the air, similar to mobs and blocks like sand. You have to place it on a solid block.

Differences Between Java and Bedrock

Unfortunately, the armor stand doesn’t work in the same way on Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions. So, you will have to plan your ideas accordingly. The major differences between the two editions are:

Armor stands on the Bedrock edition have arms by default. Players can easily interact with them and can even change the pose of the armor stand by crouching and using the secondary action key on them.On the Java edition, the armor stands don’t have arms by default. A player can get a stand with arms using commands, but even then, they don’t get access to most poses.Lastly, all armor stands can hold items like swords in the Bedrock edition. But there is no such option on the Java edition unless you spawn custom armor stands with arms.

How to Spawn Armor Stand with Arms in Minecraft Java

Technically, you can’t make armor stand with arms in Minecraft Java. But using the best Minecraft commands, you can spawn one in your world. To do so, open your chat and use the following command to summon armor stand with arms:
/summon minecraft:armor_stand ~ ~ ~ {ShowArms:1} Do keep in mind that the spawned armor stand will lose its arms when broken. So, only spawn it where you want to place it. Moreover, this custom armor stand can hold items like swords even on the Java edition. But you will have to break the stand to get that item back.
