It packs different features for tracking the items like playing sound, updating location, lost mode, and so on. But for that one feature, everyone is excited about is precision finding. It shows visuals, directions and gives haptics while locating AirTag attached lost items. No doubt precision dinding separates AirTag from other Bluetooth trackers in the market. But a lot of AirTag buyers have taken to Reddit and different forums to report that precision finding is not working for them. It might be caused because of different reasons. There are certain limitations and requirements with the precision finding. As you might already know this feature only works with the latest iPhones having a U1 Chip. The list includes last year’s iPhone 11 Series and the latest iPhone 12 Series. If you don’t have one of the supported iPhones sorry precision finding will not work for you. Other than that Ultra Wideband is not available in certain countries. You can check the full list of countries where Ultra Wideband is not supported currently. But If you have the latest iPhone and still not able to use the Precision Finding feature. No need to worry as I will provide the working fix for this issue.

How To Fix AirTag Precision Finding Not Working

1. Make Sure Precise Location Is Turned On

So you own one of the latest iPhones and bought AirTag to use the precision finding feature. Now you are in a situation where the precision finding is not working and you are worried about it. To get rid of the problem the very first thing you should do is to check whether the precision location is turned on for Find My app or not. Most of the AirTag buyers were facing the issue because the precise location was not enabled for Find My app. Now your question will be how I can check whether the precise location is enabled or not.

To do so Go to settings. In the settings go to privacy settings. Under privacy settings find location services. The location services should be turned on.

Now scroll a little bit down and you will see Find My. Tap on it and you will see three options ‘Never’, ‘Ask Next Time’, and ‘While Using The App’. In these options the select third one While Using the app.You will also see an option named precise location, enable it. It will provide an accurate location that is necessary for precision finding to work.

This is the most definite fix as of now and It comes straight from the Apple support page.

2. Make Sure Network & Wireless Settings Is Turned On

While reading different Reddit discussions I found a few users have reported turning Network and Wireless settings fixed the issue for them. To check whether network and wireless settings are enabled or not. Follow the below steps.

Go to settings and then Privacy settings.

Now go to location services. Make sure location services are turned on.

Scroll down until you found System Services. Select it.

Under System services look for Networking & Wireless. Make sure it is enabled. If It is disabled it means U1 chip functionality is turned off and the precision finding feature depends on the U1 chip.

3. Update Your iPhone

Other than that make sure you are running the latest version of iOS. The AirTag support was added with iOS 14.5 so if you are able to connect your AirTag it is confirmed that you are on iOS 14.5 or above. Still check for any available updates and install them. It’s always advisable to run on the latest version to enjoy all the features at their best.

4. Make Sure You Are Within Range

Precision finding works only when you are in its range which is around 30-40 feet. Don’t expect it to work from a very long distance let’s say 100 feet or even more. So If you are trying it for more than 40 feet make sure you are within the range.

5. Check Battery Status

Although chances are very rare that your AirTag battery is dying as it’s been less than a month for it to be launched. As per Apple, batteries of AirTag will easily last for around one year. But I will suggest you check the battery status by going into your AirTag setting, It will be visible below the name of your AirTag. You can also try simple fixes like removing the battery and reinserting it once again.

Bottom Line

The AirTag is a fairly new device and users are not aware of all the required settings to utilize its features. That’s the reason simple settings that need to be turned on causing the error. Once you have enabled precise location, networking, and wireless most probably precision finding will start working for you. Also, keep your iPhone updated, try to use the feature within the range, and also check the battery status of AirTag. Are the above fixes helped you in fixing the issue for you?
