Tame and Breed Camels in Minecraft (2022)
Note: Currently, camels are only available as an experimental feature in Minecraft 1.20 Beta and 22w42a Snapshot. They’re still under development, and their mechanics are subject to change until the final release.
What are Camels in Minecraft
Camels are passive Minecraft mobs that only spawn in the desert biome of the overworld. They’re one of the few rideable mobs in the game, similar to horses, donkeys, and mules. But what makes the camels in Minecraft truly special is their ability to enable two players to ride at once. Other than camels, this ability is only limited to rafts and boats in Minecraft.
But even if you don’t want to ride these beautiful desert creatures, they’re still a worthy addition to your Minecraft house ideas. However, due to their biome exclusiveness, it can be hard to get a bunch of them. So, keep reading to find out how to spawn dozens of camels using only two of them. Meanwhile, you can also explore other aspects of camels in Minecraft 1.20 through our linked guide.
What Do Camels in Minecraft Eat
Just like in the real world, cactuses are the main part of Camel’s meal. They are exclusive to the desert biome and are easily breakable by bare hands or with any tool. We suggest you use an axe to avoid taking damage from the cactus. Also, as we did with other mobs in the past, you have to use their primary food source (the cactus) to breed camels in Minecraft. So, when you come across them, make sure to collect at least two pieces of cactuses. If there’s a camel nearby, it will follow you while you are holding the cactus.
How to Find Camels in Minecraft
It is common knowledge that camels have been domesticated for decades at this point. So, in the real world, it is quite rare to find them in deserts, away from civilization. The same holds true for the game as well. The camels only spawn in and around desert villages in Minecraft. You can’t find them in a desert biome that doesn’t have a village. This makes camels one of the most challenging mobs to find in the overworld. Luckily, you only need two camels to make an unlimited number by breeding them.
To speed up the process, you can use one of our best Minecraft village seeds and find camels in no time. When you finally come across one, you can either trap it in blocks until you find another one. Or, you can use lead to tie it down to a fence or similar blocks. Not to forget, you can also use cactus to make the camel follow you to the desired spot.
How to Breed Camels in Minecraft
Now that you know the basic mechanics of camels, it’s time to create more of them. So, follow these steps to breed camels in Minecraft:
- First, find two camels and put them next to each other. Camels usually don’t wander off. But as an added precaution, you can either create a fence around them or use lead to tie the tow camels down.
- Then, feed one piece of cactus to each camel by right-clicking or using the secondary action key on them. When they are fed, you will see hearts popping over the camels’ heads. After that, both of them will walk toward each other, and a baby camel will spawn within seconds.
- Once the baby camel spawns, the parents won’t be breedable for almost 10 minutes. Similarly, it will take around 15-20 minutes for the baby camel to grow into an adult. Then, you can use the new camel for breeding as well.
Breed Minecraft Camels to Get Baby Camel
With that, you are now ready to make your own camel zoo in Minecraft by breeding them using cactuses, which you need to gather from a desert biome. If you want to take this a step further, you can also replicate our Minecraft cow farm design but with camels instead of cows. Though, make sure your fences are tall enough so that the camels don’t escape. With that said, what other desert mob do you want to see in Minecraft 1.20? Meerkats, perhaps?
