God of War Ragnarok: Everything You Need to Know (Updated September 2021)

This information dump contains different sections regarding GOW Ragnarok’s various elements. If you would rather read about a particular topic like gameplay or story, use the table below to quickly jump to that section.

God of War Ragnarok Release Date

When Sony first announced God of War Ragnarok back in 2020, it had a release date of 2021. However, it has since been delayed to 2022.
While gamers expected Sony to announce a definite release date during this year’s PlayStation Showcase, there has been no such luck. As it stands right now, God of War Ragnarok is still due to release sometime in 2022. Now, as many of you must be wondering – what is the reason for the delay in the release date of God of War Ragnarok?
While Santa Monica Studio never gave a reason for this delay, it has been revealed that GOW Ragnarok was delayed due to Kratos’ voice actor Christopher Judge. In a series of short emotional tweets, the actor confessed he had back surgery, and hence, he couldn’t work for some time back in 2019. Judge praised the developer for pushing back the game, so he could fully heal and come back stronger. You can check out his tweet right here: Besides, as many of you might agree, a finished game with a delayed release is better compared to an incomplete and rushed one (looking at you, Cyberpunk 2077).

Is God of War Ragnarok a PS5 Exclusive?

God of War Ragnarok is not a PS5 exclusive. However, keeping to Sony’s tradition of previous GOW games, Ragnarok will be a PlayStation exclusive. Furthermore, there is good news for previous PlayStation owners as Ragnarok will be coming to PS4 as well. Herman Hulst, the director of PS Studios, confirmed the same in an interview on the official PlayStation Blog.
While the graphics will naturally be tamed on the PS4, considering the hardware’s age, we believe GOW Ragnarok will still look every bit good as 2018’s God of War title. We have no news about the various editions that will exist. But you can expect those details as time passes and once we get an official release date.

Will God of War Ragnarok Release on PC?

While we would disregard a PC release straight away, Sony’s recent record of porting PlayStation games have us believing GOW Ragnarok could come to PC in the future. God of War Ragnarok will not be available to play on PCs at launch in 2021. So yeah, nothing about the GOW Ragnarok release on PC has been confirmed yet, so we suggest you take any rumor you read with a grain of salt. As for a definite answer, we wager that it is still far away as Sony will wait and gauge Ragnarok’s popularity on consoles before even discussing a PC release.

Can I Pre-Order God of War Ragnarok?

At this point, no you cannot pre-order God of War Ragnarok on your PS4 or PS5. The only information about the game’s release we have right now is the 2022 rollout window. Any pre-order information is still under wraps. We will need to hang back and wait for any pre-order details. However, rest assured, we will update this article with links once the pre-orders commence.

Will there be DLCs for God of War Ragnarok?

There is no news about any DLCs right now. However, the 2018 release of God of War did receive new content, including new armor, other changes, and even a New Game Plus. So yeah, it’s safe to assume that GOW Ragnarok could very well get some DLCs down the road. Furthermore, with almost full certainty, we can also assume that you won’t have to pay for these expansion packs.

What’s the Story in God of War Ragnarok?

The PlayStation Showcase 2021 revealed a three-minute trailer that unfurled some details about God of War Ragnarok. However, before we begin discussing that, here’s a quick rundown of the previous game.
At the end of the 2018 reboot of God of War, we saw Kratos and Atreus discovering that Faye was actually a giant called Laufey, which makes Atreus a half-god and half-giant. We also learn that Atreus has another name: Loki. As you would also remember, Kratos had killed his seemingly invincible brother Baldur, thereby bringing an end to the cycle of revenge and pain. However, that also meant the beginning of the prophecy that predicted Ragnarok – the end of the world and the death of gods. As Kratos and Loki return home, they get into a discussion about the son’s true origin and his responsibilities. They also talk about Fimbulwinter, the great winter before Ragnarok.

A New Search Begins

From what we saw in the trailer, Ragnarok will pick up a few years after the previous incident. It will now showcase a teenage Loki and a slightly older Kratos. Loki is still insistent on learning about his legacy and if he can play a part in stopping Ragnarok. As the bond between the father and son went through a series of developments in 2018, we can expect the same to be repeated in God of War Ragnarok.
Loki is going through a rebellious phase and is adamant to get out into the world and find answers while Kratos won’t allow him to do so. The reason is that the father wants his son to learn from the former’s mistake as we are all too familiar with Kratos’ bloody fight with the gods.
However, after some conflict and talk, the trailer shows the trio of Kratos, Loki, and Mimir venture out into the world to free Tyr, the old God of War and son of Odin. He has been imprisoned by his father and thought to be dead. The trailer shows as much when Kratos breaks Tyr’s locks and releases him.
Furthermore, past players will remember that we could only access six of all nine realms in 2018’s God of War. Ragnarok will open up the remaining three realms, namely Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and of course, Asgard, which will encompass a big plot point. While the trailer only showed bits and pieces of the story, we can expect more story and character development as the release date draws closer.

Is Ragnarok the Last God of War Game?

One thing that has now been confirmed is that God of War Ragnarok will be the last game in the Norse storyline. It will bring an end to the Norse saga and close Kratos and Atreus’ chapter for good. While this news may be disappointing to gamers not wanting the reboot to end with just two games, Santa Monica Studios does not want to unnecessarily stretch out the story. Therefore, once Ragnarok ends, we can expect this father-son journey to do so too.

List of Characters in God of War Ragnarok (New and Recurring)

While Ragnarok’s trailer is a breath of fresh air to the story, gamers also find comfort in some familiar faces. We see Brok and Sindri hard at work and inviting Loki inside for wares. Mimir is naturally present attached to Kratos as always.
However, not everything is moving up and up as the trio has formed some formidable enemies, some of which were revealed in the trailer. And this is where we answer the question on everyone’s mind – Is Thor in God of War Ragnarok? Yes, Thor makes an appearance in the game, obviously wanting revenge for his sons’ deaths. The deadly son of Odin first made an appearance in a secret cutscene at the end of 2018’s God of War.
Speaking of revenge, Ragnarok will have Freya, a witch who was once Kratos’ friend but now an enemy after Kratos killed her son Baldur. Gamers who have played the previous God of War title already know how viciously angry Freya was towards the end. Sony hammers that point home by reminding players about Freya’s immense power.
Ragnarok also features Angrboda, one of the last remaining giants, and Loki’s future mate a fact, which no doubt, will play an important role in the story. Furthermore, we are yet to meet some other incredible characters. Only time will tell if Sony releases more footage or simply drop God of War Ragnarok for gamers to get on with this final installment in the Norse saga.

What Will God of War Ragnarok Gameplay Be Like?

2018’s God of War reboot garnered praise for its stellar gameplay and combat mechanics, and Ragnarok seems to follow that tradition. The trailer mostly shows Ragnarok employing the same gameplay aspects such as boat riding and general exploration. Combat mechanics are getting some touch-ups. We see Kratos using some new power moves to bash enemies into the ground and Loki helping with his own weapons enhanced with Runic magic.
However, Ragnarok has stuck to a tried and tested formula and features mostly the same gameplay mechanics found in the previous God of War. But seeing as how flawless the previous gameplay was, it is a good thing. Besides venturing to Asgard, the title will also leverage new gameplay design, including realms that will take players from “verdant, otherworldly jungles” to “intricate subterranean mining networks.“

More Enemies Ahead

Speaking of enemies, there are some. new common and larger enemies the trio encounters. It adds to the variety of encounters the main characters will have, along with ramped-up difficulty. The enemies in Ragnarok will now be “harsher” and also include a “host of new creatures” from across Norse mythology. The new gameplay shows as much when Kratos battles new enemies such as the Stalker or the Dreki. Another notable thing worth mentioning is that GOW Ragnarok will feature gameplay through a single camera shot, just like 2018’s God of War title. That means gameplay was never broken by any cutscenes whatsoever and gamers loved this concept. One, unbroken shot like 2018.— Matt Sophos (@mattsophos) September 9, 2021
With Santa Monica Studio keeping a majority of the same gameplay elements while blending in some newer aspects, God of War Ragnarok is poised to be an amazing game. Stay tuned for more trailers and insights into GOW Ragnarok’s gameplay.

What is God of War Ragnarok Game Length?

After discussing the gameplay elements, many of you must be wondering – how long is God of War Ragnarok? Well, we are not in the dark on this subject and already know that God of War Ragnarok gameplay could be around 40 hours long.
David Jaffe, the director of the first God of War (2005) game, revealed that God of War Ragnarok features 40 hours of gameplay in a YouTube video on his channel. Further, he mentioned, “Now, I don’t know if that’s 100-percent platinum trophy completion or if that’s average playtime.” So yeah, you can expect the Ragnarok gameplay to be lengthier than the 2018 God of War reboot, which needed you to invest around 21 hours to complete the main story.

Who is the God of War Ragnarok’s Director?

While Cory Barlog did an excellent job directing the 2018 God of War reboot, he will not be returning for Ragnarok. The new director is Eric Williams, another veteran of the GOW series and a more than capable one to get the job done. The change of directors isn’t out of any animosity but a move to maintain a fresh perspective. Besides, given Eric Willams’ history in directing previous God of War games, there’s no doubt about his abilities.
